The SMP project was initiated by the Government of PEI in response to the State of the Coast Report and Interim Coastal Policy Recommendations Reports, developed by the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation at the University of Prince Edward Island.
These reports acknowledge PEI’s increasing coastal vulnerability, made evident during post-tropical storms Dorian and Fiona, and highlight the importance of increasing our resilience in the face of a changing climate. The development of shoreline management plans for PEI is an important part of building a more resilient Island into the future. The project has two phases with phase one completed and phase two underway.
SMPs are being developed through a collaborative process with help from four groups that have been formed to support this project:
- A Technical Working Group
- Advisory Committee (includes representatives from Lennox Island First Nation, universities, CLIMAtlantic, the PEI Watershed Alliance, the Federal Government, and the PEI Institute of Planners)
- A provincial Interdepartmental Working Group
- External project consultants leading the process.
