Shoreline Management Plans

Shorelines in Prince Edward Island are always changing. Natural changes can be caused by flooding, waves, storms, and sea level rise. Other changes happen because of human activity like the construction of retaining walls and other types of shoreline hardening. Both natural and human changes to the shoreline can impact natural habitats and affect people, property, infrastructure and the economy.

How the project came to be

The SMP project was initiated by the Government of PEI in response to the State of the Coast and Interim Coastal Policy Recommendations Reports, developed by the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation at the University of Prince Edward Island.

These reports acknowledge PEI’s increasing coastal vulnerability, made evident during post-tropical storms Dorian and Fiona, and highlight the importance of increasing our resilience in the face of a changing climate. The development of shoreline management plans for PEI is an important part of building a more resilient Island into the future.
